What are the reasons to get a custom made engagement ring?

Let’s talk about clarity, cut, and colour. These are three of the most important elements when it comes to designing a bespoke engagement ring.

Colour

Did you know, diamond colour is graded on how white a diamond is? The scale starts at D to Z; the further down the scale you go, the less white the diamond is – think an off white-yellow colour.

When it comes to colour, I always recommend that my clients stay between D – H colour for a bright white diamond! That said, if you choose to set your chosen diamond in rose or yellow gold, you can opt for I, J or K colour as it isn’t as noticeable. What’s more yellow diamonds are becoming increasing popular on the market.

Clarity

Clarity is graded from FL (flawless) to I3 (included). This is where you can compromise the most on quality. I recommend selecting SI1 or SI2, as long as the diamond is unmarked to the naked eye, this is a cost-effective decision where can save you thousands of pounds.

Visually you will see no difference between a flawless diamond and an SI graded diamond. Inclusions are simply natural marks of a diamond, the same way we have moles and freckles etc. I also feel they give a diamond character.

Cut

Let’s cut straight to it! There are five gradings when it comes to a diamond’s cut;

• Excellent
• Very good
• Good
• Fair
• Poor

A diamond is graded into the above categories based on how well it has been cut from its rough form. A diamond’s sparkle is the result of how it’s been cut – not its colour or clarity. Round diamonds are given three grades; Cut, Polish, Symmetry, whereas fancy cut diamonds are given two grades; Polish and Symmetry.

If a diamond has been given an excellent grading then expect it to be super sparkly and watch it dance in the light. It’s been cut to perfection and will perform brilliantly!

Diamonds can be sent to a lab for official quality grading. Three experts will look at the stone and agree upon the grading – it’s important to remember this is only ever an opinion.

GIA, IGI and HRD

The most known and respected lab is The Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The GIA came up with the grading system and is the most strict when it comes to its grading results.

There are lots of other labs across the world, including The International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the European equivalent of the GIA, The Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD), which translates to the ‘Diamond High Council’. Both are well known and respected, but not as strict or prestigious as GIA.

GIA-graded diamonds will always hold a premium in price but are by far the most popular when it comes to diamond grading labs.
